Up to 91<>percentage<> of patients with hear disease have periodontitis.

If you smoke you are 4 times as likely to have periodontal disease as someone who has never smoked.

Periodontal disease further complicates diabetes because the inflammation impairs the body to utilize insulin.

What can you do ?
* Make sure you schedule professional teeth cleanings. It's one of the most important steps we can take to preserve total body wellness.

* Make sure to request biofilm removal with ultrasonics prior to your polishing.

Today, many physicians are referring heart, diabetes, pulmonary and pregnancy patients to dentists.

Your Mouth, the Gateway to Your Body

Bacteria build up on the teeth making your gums more prone to infection. The gums become inflamed. The immune system is responsible to attack this infection.

Over time, inflammation and the chemicals it releases destroys the bone structure holding the teeth in place. The result is severe gum disease known as periodontitis.

Inflammation can also cause problems in the rest of the body.

In recent years, studies have shown that oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream and travel throughout the body.

Oral Health and Heart Disease

The theory is that inflammation in the mouth causes inflammation in the blood vessels. Animal studies have shown periodontal bacteria are found in the plaque deposits that narrow the coronary arteries.

There is a greater risk that fatty plaque will break off the wall of a blood vessel and travel to the heart or brain, causing a heart attack or stroke.

Oral Health and Diabetis

Inflammation in the mouth seems to weaken the body's ability to control blood sugar.

Oral Health and Pregnancy

Two hypotheses exist. Firstly, periodontal disease is believed to affect the maternal and fetal immune responses systemically leading to premature labour. Alternatively, evidence is accumulating that oral bacteria may translocate directly into the pregnant uterus causing localized inflammation and adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Potential Effects of Moderate to Severe Periodontitis on the Body
Stroke; 2 times greater risk
Chronic Respiratory Disease; 2-5 times
Coronary artery disease; 2 times
Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes; 4-7 times
Diabetes; 2-4 times

When you schedule your re-care appointment, be sure to have biofilm removal with ultrasonics prior to the polishing.

Oral bacteria are hard to eradicate because they form many-layered, mineral encrusted communities, known as biofilms. If untreated, these biofilms become lodged under the gums around the teeth.

Professional cleanings are the only way to remove calculus (tartar). If tartar is allowed to accumulate, it will unfortunately provide the right conditions for bacteria to thrive next to the gums.

The purpose of cleaning and polishing is basically to leave the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth so that bacteria are unable to stick to them leaving you with the best chance of keeping your teeth clean during your regular homecare !
